Originally from Salina, pianist Brock Chart was introduced to music at an early age through piano lessons and quickly found a passion for jazz and composition. After high school, Brock briefly attended Washburn University where he was the jazz pianist for the top large jazz ensemble and jazz combo. In 2011 he transferred to KU to study music composition and was very involved the school’s jazz studies program where he played in the KU Jazz Ensemble I, KU Jazz Combo I and KU Jazz Singers. In his time at KU, Brock has been an active composer for the school’s jazz groups by providing several original compositions as well as a few big band arrangements for incoming guest artists. In 2013 Brock was awarded a Student Music Award in DownBeat magazine for Original Jazz Composition – Lead Sheet, in the Undergraduate Category for his piece “Northern Lights”. Brock received his Bachelor’s in Music Composition from KU in May of 2014 and spends his time teaching at the Lawrence Piano Studio as well as continuing to be an active composer in the community.
